4 Getting Ready for IIS 6
If IIS 5 was an improvement on IIS 4, then IIS 6 is quantum leap! Far from being a simple product improvement, IIS 6 is a complete overhaul of Microsoft’s Web server product. This session includes a demonstration of the exciting new features such as Web Gardens, real-time editing of the XML Metabase, and Application Pools (to name a few). In addition, you’ll learn about the radical changes in the IIS 6 architecture that promises significant improvements in stability, security, and performance. Brett will offer several suggestions about potential rough spots during your IIS 5 to IIS 6 transition, and what to do now to be prepared for this new technology. IIS 6 is Microsoft’s most ambitious and mature Web server to date.

Note: This session is available as 1.5 hrs, 3 hrs, and full day events

4 The Amazing Log Parser Tool
Microsoft quietly released the most incredible tool they've produced in years. The Log Parser tool slices and dices log files and systems like the IIS logs, Registry, file system, XML files, Event logs and far more. This presentation introduces the Log Parser Tool and how to build queries. Included are samples of scripts used by Microsoft.com, which relies heavily on the Log Parser Tool for day-to-day administration and troubleshooting. Brett authored a white paper for Technet on the tool, which can be found on the April 2004 Downloads CD from TechNet.

 4 IIS 5 Lockdown
Let’s face it, IIS’s reputation regarding security is less than stellar, but can you make IIS a secure Web server? You bet, and in this session, IIS MVP Brett Hill, Windows & .Net Magazine contributing editor, will demonstrate tools, provide tips, and up-to-date best practices for securing an IIS server. This session will include a detailed review of Microsoft’s URLScan and IISLockdown tools, present an improved version of Microsoft’s IIS 5 Baseline Security Checklist, and present other best practices regarding security. Using these tips and tools, your IIS server security can be significantly improved, without adding a lot of administrative overhead.

4 IIS Troubleshooting Tools and Techniques
This presentation includes Tips, Tricks, Do’s, and Don’ts gathered from real-word implementation of many IIS servers, as well as insights gathered from working with Microsoft. This session is packed with useful demonstrations of tools and techniques for quickly diagnosing problems. You’ll learn several top-notch suggestions for configuring IIS servers for security and stability, and you’ll glean information about largely unknown but very useful features built into IIS. This session is especially recommended for experienced administrators.

4 IIS 5 Performance Tuning
Tuning a Web server for performance is often more of an art than a science. Knowing what switch to flip or tweaking a secret setting can often result in dramatic improvements in throughput. In this presentation, Brett will demonstrate specific web server tuning strategies and techniques for IIS 5. The presentation will include detailed monitoring recommendations and adjustments to the registry and metabase. We will review tuning for the networking components, operating system, and IIS settings as well as discuss system-wide dependencies. Topics include tuning ASP applications, diagnosing bottlenecks, and a demonstration of Microsoft's Web Stress tool.
